Floating an idea...

pacifier 12 Jul 2005 16:01

Hey all,

Ive been thinking it would be cool to organise a night where a whole bunch of low profile bands (like mine) play 10-20 min sets each then get a higher profile band to headline. I reckon to be fair each band should have to sell at least a dozen tickts to make sure theyre not freeloading and relying on other bands to bring all the peeps and also to guarentee the promoter of this shamozle some bucks ...

If a band sucks you dont have to endure them for too long (plus its likely they will play their best songs)

Any interest?

Mick V

Sounds cool to me. I think bands should be expected to pull 50+ punters. Really pack the whole joint.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

pacifier 13 Jul 2005 11:36

Now your talking!

What do you think if we can the idea of a promoter...

If we get 6 bands to each sell 50 tix @ $5 a ticket we would have like $1500 bucks (if we all pre buy them)

Spend half of it on the headline act (what do you get for $750 guarenteed these days?) and half on promo (an ad in beat or inpress, some posters, the tickts)

Then sell tix at the door for $6 and split that among the 6 support bands (we get payed last) + a percentage of the bar tab from the venue .

Bands who play early should have longer sets then bands who play later to compensate...

Thoughts, ideas???

ps really like your mp3 musik is love : )</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

musicislove 13 Jul 2005 12:37

Yeah that sounds cool. I think earlier bands should probably have to pay less, as regardless of the length of their set, people generally turn up a bit later to most gigs. Having said that, the door should have a list of each band and punters should say who they are there to see to give a fair indication of who did work promoting the gig. Would probably act as a further incentive for bands to bring as many punters as possible. But yeah, it is a good idea!

G'day Mick (Pacifier), Zac here, good to see you back on the forums, haven't seen you here for a while. Only one problem with your idea - the set-up time for the bands will will equal to or even longer than their actual playing times. Unless you did the gig at the Corner Hotel with the 2 stages operating which is a cool system. Also, I think it's hard to pre-sell tickets, people are much more inclined to pay their $5 if they can just turn up and pay at the door, rather than having to decide weeks in advance that they're definitely going to be able to make it to the gig.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

musicislove 14 Jul 2005 14:07

Yeah, don't think he meant selling ticket prior to the gig. I think he just meant bands put in the money prior to it and recoup it from their door money. Could be worng. I agree, selling tickets prior to a gig is just a pain in the arse for all involved except the promoter.

We would be better off just getting each band to put in about 200 each to pay for the bigger band and just take the door ourselves. Band do their own advertising and the big band covers their own advertising for the gig. If it is someone like Dallas Crane, people will turn out in droves anyway. And they seem like cool guys - they would probably do it.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

pacifier 14 Jul 2005 14:21

Hey Zac : ) Hey MIL

I was thinknig pre sell tickets... But i like the idea of each band putting in x amount to pay for a draw better.

I was wondering about the whole dual stage thing...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

musicislove 15 Jul 2005 10:00

dual; stages would be awesome. 1 minute change over from bands would be brilliant. each band gets 25 mins. That would work really well.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

SpedsMB 19 Jul 2005 16:25

To be honest I think this is a terrible idea. Trying to beg your friends to PAY MONEY to see your band play for 10-20 MINUTES is ridiculous. Let alone being the band that has to spend 15 minutes setting up to play for 10 minutes and then pack back up... I honestly couldn't be fucked. And sure you could suggest sharing the same backline but I reckon same backline makes for some terrible nights... All the bands end up sounding the same, looking the same and any hope to make you band stand out is lost.

What I want is the Punters back, the Duke of Windsor back, the Espy going back to being open to all bands.... lets get back to putting on rock shows, getting 12 free beers and going home with $30 to share between 4 dudes...

No gimmicks, no nonsense. Just rock solid playing times, quick as hell change overs and lets get back to GIGS!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

musicislove 20 Jul 2005 10:00

What do mean 'let's go back to playing gigs for $30'? You can do that any night of the week. With two stages, you could make the night really successful, and your friends aren't coming to just see your band, they are coming to see all the bands and the major act.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

pacifier 20 Jul 2005 11:06

I see where your coming from SpedsMB, its not a perfect idea but what im looking for is new ways to run nights so lower profile bands can get some more exposure, play better shows and have a bit more control of the night (rather then be at the mercy of a booker).

Ive read a bunch of posts on this forum of how promoters and venues can treat the average band like crap. If a bunch of bands organised somthing big, booked a venue, ran the promo ect we would probably get a much more satisfying result. A big band probably wouldnt return my calls but if we could guarentee them the bucks they would sign on.

Im still up for playing sleezy pubs for peanuts and a bunch of beers but man id love it if they wernt the only shows i was playing.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

"and your friends aren't coming to just see your band, they are coming to see all the bands and the major act."

I can't speak for your friends but the majority of my friends couldn't give a fuck about the other bands on the line-up.... it sounds stupid but in a lot of cases its true. Most people's idea of a night out doesn't involve 4 people jumping around on a stage screaming into the mike. We (band members) are a special breed, we can go to see an unknown and enjoy it for the songs or the performance or for how terrible a certain band is. For 90% of Melbourne this isn't their idea of fun, so trying to get friends to pay money for to see another friend perform for 10 minutes is a little silly to me.....

Of course this is all just my opinion...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

musicislove 20 Jul 2005 14:32

Fair enough... better not invite your friends then (kidding). I just think if there is a major act to finish with and the night is run smoothly in a venue like the corner, and it is only 6 bucks entry, people will come. Especially with 5 bands promoting the shit out of it. Just my opinion too. Peace.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

SpedsMB 26 Jul 2005 15:37

Maybe I'm the only one with friends like this but its my experience with alot of people that they don't care about the types of "major acts" your talking about. Unless your talking MAJOR major acts as in The Living End, Shihad, Bodyjar etc.... Maybe its just MY friends that don't share a passion for local rock but to them theres no difference between "Neil Wedd and Horn Dogs" and "British India".... unless its on high rotation on Nova or MMM I couldn't get any of my friends barr other band members to see me play for 10 minutes followed by Vasco Era. Sure, I hang with dickheads and wankers though hahaha!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

musicislove 27 Jul 2005 09:37

Yeah, I am starting to think YOUR friends are nothing like MY friends. I hang out with people who would prefer to play some pool at a pub rather than wait outside of a nightclub all night. My friend's like independent music and will happily part with $6 to see a bunch of cool indie bands, especially if there is a major act at the end of the night to top it off. They certainly don't listen to fucking Nova.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Eclipsestix 28 Jun 2006 21:56

Yeah, (although I'm only in a 15-16 year old practicing band) I'm sure all my mates would love to help me and my band out like that. I could definitely get 20 people to come and see us for $6 in a few years time, guys and girls, because they would know they were doing us a favour. That's what mates are for. Also, I know it was the principle, but I know people who would kill for Vasco Era tickets.

So I reckon it's a great idea, and hopefully when we get our act together we might try and get something organised in Perth.

One more random topic... Say a band has a regular friday night gig at their local pub, and they pull a bit of a crowd, would they expect to get paid or would drinks be the currency. Just wondering.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
