Neil, I thought the article by Moretti was wonderful, and very timely. I am constantly shocked at how many times these simple courtesies are ignored by bands. I would like to add another point, which I think should be observed by all bands at gigs and for each member of said bands: Every player in each band playing on a line-up should be there to watch the entire gig, from the first song of the first band, to the last song of the headline act. That's non-negotiable in my opinion. It's not much to ask, and it's just good manners. And it shouldn't just be some token gesture by only one of the band members; they should be all there. I can't stand seeing bands loading in their equipment, or removing their equipment, whilst a band is performing. It is so rude!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I agree Likelukeluke, but in fairness to some bands they may be doing another show elsewhere. Don't always assume the worst of people when you see them packing up their gear. Although it is good manners to let the other bands know.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I laughed at most of this.

8) Support bands do not get encores- What about Duran Duran at Robbie Williams?

Luke I think that`s a bit harsh really. I`m in a local band and we gig around. However, all of us have full time jobs, which can be quite demanding. If our band is on first slot at say 10 on a weeknight, then I don`t really want to stick around until 1am to catch everyone else. Well, to qualify, I`d like to, but seeing as how I have to get up at 7 the next morning, it`s not practical. Weekends are a different story altogether.

Just as a futher aside, what`s with bands always getting on so late?? It really shits me sometimes. When I lived in Japan if there was a bunch of bands on usually the first one was on at 8 - and plenty of punters would have turned up by then. If lots of people are doing last train / tram runs then this makes sense - it`s also a great idea if you`re trying to attract people who work (which is the vast majority of us) to gigs. What do you think Neil? </title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I totally agree Mrbond, late starting times are something I just don't understand, it's ridiculous. I think though that the Indie Initiative gigs are very well organised in this way; they start at 8:30 and there are strict rules about starting right on time, and having a short set.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Pretty good article I must, but Johnny forgot something.

Bring your own equipment to gigs!!!

I have no issue if your gear fucks up at a gig and you need a loaner.

But if you take your music seriously - have your own gear.
Saying shit like - "saves my bass player carrying shit" doesn't cut it.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Boofhead41 5 Jun 2006 15:23

I'm with Lukex3 on that one - if you've got 4 bands on a weeknight and the first band hits the stage at 9:30 you're going to lose half your crowd just because they don't want the late finish.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

pacifier 7 Jun 2006 13:40

Hey MrBond,

I reckon if your on the bill you need to see every band on that night. I probably would have agreed with you a while ago but after playing a few late midweek gigs to small crowds and having the other bands all leave early I have decided that im always going to make the effort to stick around.

If your starting too early the next morning to see the last band play then you probably shouldnt be playing midweek gigs...

Mick V

ps: this is not a personal swipe just an observation (im not trying to start flame warz)</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

MrBond 25 Jun 2006 12:57

Actually that`s fair enough Mick - sorry about the super late reply. But let`s draw together some of the other discussions going on around here. I think, yes, I should be supporting other bands. But I`m 27, and I work full time. Now the thing is, ok, maybe I shouldn`t do mid week slots. But given that the vast majority of ppl work full time, and are roughly in my situation, it`s not hard to see how these gigs don`t get the support they perhaps need (the term `I` was being used very generally there).

What we really need is a few venues to really draw on the discussions here - what has been mentioned over and over is a) bands too late b) bands too loud c) too much focus on bands at the expense of an `evening out`. If I owned a pub, what I would be billing is half price meals between 6:30 and 7:30 then bands on at 8 promptly - you could even perhaps sell tickets that covered say bands and a meal for $12 or something. The idea is to make it a mid week night out which will attract `ordinary` people back to the live music scene. Just a few thoughts...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

You're 100% spot on MrBond. Love your plan. Now go out there and start a venue, and I'll start supporting it!!!!!!!!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

MrBond 28 Jun 2006 23:12

No worries Luke. PM me on Melband and I`ll send you my Cayman Islands account number. You can wire the $250,000 I`ll need there. ;)</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I remember our band playing with accessory once. Don't remember them thanking us!

They also ran out of material, so they started playing songs twice! (circa Laundry 2004)

I believe that actually having some credentials go a long way when dishing out advise to everyone else. But hey, that's just my two cents.

I do agree with most of the material in the article but i do have a problem with always thanking the venue. I have played at alot of venues that treat you like shit and think your just there for a bit off 'mood music'. some venues dont appericiate the artform and think your there to fill in time. But on the other hand some venues are fantastic and really do deserve the upmost thanks.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
