Advise on Melbourne Recording Studios

Spanky 24 Oct 2003 11:00

Hey all,

My band is currently looking at recording an EP. With the number of small studios these days and with pretty competitive pricing its hard to choose. If anyone has any experience with local studios (good or bad), that they'd like to share, it would be a great help.

Really depends on what style and how much $$'s you have.
Only studio I really recomend apart from my own is Craig at Hothouse as well..
Geoff at Pony music is pretty cool as well.

Advise wise just be careful, there are a lot of studios out there as a lot of people just out grew there home studio. Or finished there SAE course last month :) Just be careful and check out the place properly. If they have band links on there website maybe fire off a few emails to previously recorded bands...Make sure you go somewhere that does your style, if they do nu metal and your light pop it might not work and visa versa.

Just do not be to cheap on it, do less songs if money is a problem then going to a cheap place and doing more songs at lower quality.

bye Dave

David Briggs from the Production Workshop North Melbourne has recorded, produced & mastered both of my last two releases. His rates are good, and both of the bands I've recorded with have been extremely pleased with the results. Phone him on 93283085.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Thanks Neil, Cheques in the mail :)

I do all types of music as long as its good?!?:)
I do not want to spam rather just give some advise.
Although if you want to check out my web www.indentmusic.com.au

Just be careful with studios someone I met on the weekend went to a studio that is $5/hr cheaper then mine although although probably cost 10% of what mine cost. If they were happy with it who cares, although they said the quality sounded not much better then there home recording. As the studios gear was really the same quality.

So the advice I normally give:
Talk to them...
Listen to some of there stuff.
Email other bands they recorded.
Do a google search on there vocal mic, vocal mic pre and recording medium.
The prices of there gear might give you an idea where they sit.
Although gear aint everything, its the vibe and how comfortable you are playing.
Hope the advice helps...

Spanky 29 Oct 2003 01:29

thanks for the input all

As for the style of music i guess, we're somewhere between powderfinger and radiohead (for want of a better description). Acoustic and electric guitars as well as keys etc. We;d love somewhere with a grand piano if possible. Singer has very 'jeff buckley' style voice and we've really struggled to capture it in our home studio...not sure what the issues are.

thanks agian for the response peoples

IndentMusic 29 Oct 2003 11:12

Pianos. Well that will cut your list of available studios way down.
If you want a grand then your probably only look at the big ones.
I get around 3 calls a year for piano's, not really worth the hassles to buy and keep in tune.

If a real grand is very important in your music, You are left with a few choices.
1) record at the studio with the grand.
2) record that song at the studio with the grand
3) overdub at the studio with the grand and record elsewhere.
4) put the basics down at the studio with the grand and overdub elsewhere.

A electronic keyboard can come close, although if the track is dense with electric guitars and such you might not notice its fake. Of course a cheap casio will be heard :)

Hope again this helps.
Bye Dave

IndentMusic 29 Oct 2003 11:15

Vocals at home. What are you using for mic, pre and soundcard wise?
I mean if the voice sounds ok live then normally PA's are not the best quality. So something must be missing at home?
Does the voice sound ok on its own, or is it lost in a mix?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

In response to studios with pianos/recording grand piano in Melbourne, I definitely agree with Dave in that there has been limited choice in Melbourne for that purpose...understandable though, given what is involved in having and maintaining a great sounding instrument, in the right room with the right gear.

We (Tone Collective) record a lot of piano, which is partly why we recently relocated to a new studio facility in North Fitzroy that was built/designed for that very purpose. We have a Yamaha C5 grand piano in a beautifully sounding, fully isolated live room, which we record with Neumann microphones, neve preamps and Prism 24 bit converters.

Rochelle 25 Jan 2004 09:46

...btw, we work regularly with other studios and producers in Melbourne (and home recording artists) who don't have pianos in their studios, by tracking the piano for them at Tone Collective (for re-insertion back into their own mixes)...This way, artists have the freedom to record more of their project at home, or at a studio they may be used to working at, and still benifit from having great sounding acoustic piano tracks in their projects.

This may be worth thinking about for your vocals, etc, that aren't quite working at home...even if a lot of your recording is going well at home, it may be worth considering investing in tracking some of the more crucial elements at a quality studio, and furthermore, mixing your project somewhere with a good monitoring environment. You'll probably find that it still works out cheaper than recording the whole project at a budget studio, and most importantly, will sound a whole lot better.

Good luck with your EP.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Indent Recordings are very good, i have heard a few samples and they aren't bad.

Geoff from Pony is awesome! He's a good friend but he can make a crap band sound really good. And make a good band sound friggin' awesome!

He is a good guy too and you feel relaxed when you work with him, my best recording efforts have been with him.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Indent have good gear but the dude running it is an ill-tempered twat.
It doesn't make a conjusive creative atmosphere with the vibes he puts out.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

If you're into vintage gear and balls out recordings without an engineer who wants to polish everything up got to FAT SOUND. Recorded there with my band THE UNION having been to newmarket for a previous recording and this place wiped the floors with newmarket. Dungeon of a place opposite Festy Hall. And Barry (the engineer) fucking LISTENS.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
