cover bands doing origionals

whats the thoughts on working cover bands moving into the original scene?
are they inhibiting completely original artists' chances of getting good gigs?

i am not a fan of cover bands, however if they want to write oringinal music, they should have just as much opportunity as original bands....</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

What about bands who play a mix of 50% covers and 50% originals?

I've no problem with cover bands moving into originals. Many bands I know are cover bands to make money for their original music projects. Unfortunately there is much more money to be made in being a (good) coverband. From the one band I've seen go from being successful cover band to attempt to do originals it hasn't gone too well. That is, being massively popular as a coverband doesn't mean you'll automatically get an originals audience.

50/50 is a different story. Crowds seem to want one or the other. If you come across as a cover band people get annoyed when you play something they don't know. If you present yourself as an originals band they're ready to not know anything you play and are surprised and even annoyed by too many covers. You'll often hear the comment "that band was good except that terrible cover of [song]".</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I was talking to a friend the other day about this subject. Its really easy to pick out the bands who do covers p/t or used to do covers. Doing covers is a completely different scene to original music. For some reasons players become infected with an inane sense of conformity when working the typical cover band venues with cover music. The cover music enviroment has a tendancy to shun individuality.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

The coverband I saw do an originals show (probably almost 10 years ago now) was Slumberyard. Their coverband shows are always packed. There were about 10 people at their originals show and no-one was watching.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I think its great for cover bands to throw in a coupla' originals in order to further promote themselves. I personally don't have much time for cover bands, I'm all about originals...but having said that, Nudist Funk Orchestra are fucking brilliant! Sure they're a cover band, but they don't go with your average run-of-the-mill songs. They tweak them and make the song their own. They are fantastic. Check them out! They play Sunday nights, usually 8.30p @ the Espy front bar! Man, Marcus can sing!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I know what u mean fleuro...the cover bands that do step over to orig really do have that super radio freindly sound..ie nothing new about them. not to say that's a bad thing, but after 5 years or so playing covers it'd be pretty tough to as a whole band come up with something different. i'd think it'd be just to scratch their creative itches but the main gig'd still be the money they'd get from covers.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Tarko are a really good polished cover band, who have a great following who have recently released an excellent four track EP with some great original songs. They have a different bass-player for the original gigs, and have already had their song added to Triple M's playlist. That tells me they are doing something right. I say good on them. I do agree that some cover bands that do originals sound VERY derivative, but in this case, I think Tarko are the exception and will continue to develop their own sound. A very good, tight band.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I agree, I saw tarko for the first time at the evelyn on saturday. They sounded great. The singer said it was only their 4th original gig.. If that's true, they should kick arse. Sounded tight. I think covers are a great stepping stone for doing originals. You learn how to entertain a crowd.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
