Velour Bar 'Battle', Dodgy?

MasterB8 9 Mar 2004 13:51

Has anyone else played at the Velour Bar Battle run by Richard Sayer? We usually steer clear of battles, but he suckered us into playing by telling us there would be reps from Mushroom and BlahBlah watching young talent. For some reason we played their twice??? and saw no evidence of this. When we approached him, he told us he could be charging us to play, and that he was doing this for young bands. Whatever. Anyone else found this dodgy?

NB It should be noted that Richard is the only person who makes a profit from these nights by hiring HIS PA to the venue which the bands use. Who knows what else he is getting from the bar?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Yes! Same experience exactly. The night was run really badly too, we were told we would play at 9:30pm and ended up playing at 11:30pm. Told we had won the night and would be playing in finals in Jan and never heard from him again. I would steer clear.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Very non eventful and a complete waste of time. MasterB8 9 Mar 2004 14:24

Yeah, we were told to get there at 7:30 (he even called me at 7:00 to make sure we were on our way), then when we arrived he told us we were on at 10:00. He said he wanted all bands there early so we weren't carrying our shit in front of that stage while other acts were playing (fair enough I thought). Then when we played last (at 11:15), all the acts that had played before us decided they would start carrying their shit out which normally would have offended us, but seeing as we felt scammed too, we could see where they were coming from wanting to get away from the joint as soon as possible. It certainly didn't seem to upset Richard Sayer. My theory is 'Dick' is getting a cut from the bar and gets the bands there early so as to make a profit. Being forced to stay in a venue up to 4 hours before a performance means musicians are more than likely going to have a few beers.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

MasterB8 9 Mar 2004 14:29

Also, when I asked him where the guys from Mushroom were, he said they were at Sing Sing signing a deal with some act and they were getting paid for it there, which is "all they care about". Interesting thing to say about a sponsor of an event you are running??? I assume they are a sponsor as he displays their logo on the poster advertising the night on his website (www.insinctmusic.com).</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

smelt a rat the first time i ever spoke to this guy many months ago. when will we all learn to steer clear of these comps. they hardly ever amount to anything and only cause bands grief, frustration and contribute to a cynical, jaded view of the industry.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I've just finished reading some of the comments regarding the Velour Bar and Richard Sayer.
It is concerning that it appears he may be using the names of Festival Records etc., to "rope" bands into playing.

I've checked out his webpage and it should be noted that he has carefully listed himself, along with VB and FMR as "representatives" and not himself as an organiser.
So, basically all he is saying on his site is that they sponser the Velour Bar.

I've also written an email to FMR to a) confirm they are involved and b) if their representatives have EVER attended any launch nights with the intent of "scouting" for new talent.

It will be interesting to see what comes of the email.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

MasterB8 10 Mar 2004 09:18

Yeah cool. I wanted to do that but couldn't find an appropriate email address. This guy is such a scammer. I am surprised more people haven't been burnt by him. Hopefully Mushroom ask him to do some explaining.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

NeilWedd 10 Mar 2004 10:02

You must be very careful in these discussions. Slander can result in libel actions. It is OK to bring up events where things have not lived up to the promise. However it is not OK to insinuate about deals.
Unfortunately pwople go into Battles because they think that just like Idol they will become famous. There is no substitute for hard work. If you want to succeed, learn about the business and apply the knowledge. Go to gigs and find bands that you can play with. At least that way you will be able to work in a positive manner.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

MasterB8 10 Mar 2004 10:27

In that case, I would like to state that I have no proof of my suspicions that Richard Sayer is getting a take from the bar at Velour, and there is every chance he is only making the profit from the PA he hires out. However, I still maintain that the event he is currently running there is poorly managed with no evidence of any record industry reps, despite his prior claims (which is what suckered us into taking part). As far as your insinuations Neil about why people go into battles, I take offence. We didn't go into the comp looking for fame and riches or a shortcut through this industry. We were looking for some professional feedback, which we were promised and never received. It is as simple as that. Our band already works hard, networks with bands, attends gigs regularly and plays gigs (when we can get them).</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

moochacho 10 Mar 2004 15:26

I agree MasterB8. Our band entered the competition because it was sold as a good gig by Richard, and definitely not to get famous or anything like that. I think Richard may have even used the words "not like the normal band competitions" when he described it to us to talk us into playing, and the fact is that if a band is told there will be industry people there why wouldn't they want to make the effort to showcase their stuff in front of them. If it was sold as a band competition there would be no reason for bands to complain, but he somehow tried to make it sound a lot more legit than that.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

sound 16 Mar 2004 16:56

Hi I played in the final of the Veloure battle on thursday night. There was a solo competition on before the band comp and there was a very nice Takamine guitar waiting behind the bar for the winner. The winner walked home with the guitar. My band won the band comp and walked home with a $1500 dollar cheque.

I find some of the experiences shared on this thread strange as I thought the comp was run really well. All three nights that I played there were people from record companies there judging the event and I spoke to them each time. I learnt alot and made some good contacts.

I know alot of these comps are dodgy so I was a little sceptical but this was run really well. Asylum TV was there to film the whole thing, we got drink cards and got alot of time given to us by the record company execs who were really nice guys. I thought Richard did a really good job.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

isden2 16 Mar 2004 19:48

i went aswelll......i found it rather disorganised...the organiser, standing at
the bar, drink in hand, all smiles never made an attempt to let us know
if the night was running on time.....most people work on fridays so an
acknowledgement that that thing was atleast 2 full hours behind would have been nice.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Strange there is only one positive experience supplied. It seems 'sound' got what everyone else was promised, but never received.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

moochacho 19 Mar 2004 19:55

Hmm.... I think "sound" was either at a different Velour than everyone else, or maybe is somehow connected to RS. Just seems weird that everyone else has pretty much exactly the same things to say except "sound". On the other hand, if your experience was really like that good for you, you were one of the lucky ones.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

DisasterBoy 20 Mar 2004 10:43

I don't have much experience in the industry, but my bands first gig was at a battle (not Velour Lounge) I found it to be very disorganised, and it seems it is the norm with thes type of situations. I do know otherbands that have been in similar events simply because is what is offered if they win, but I can't really think that there has been any of them that have come through with the goods.

We played a Battle to get an idea of how it all worked, for the feeback from strangers and basically to learn the ropes of the live scene. I think we got alot out of it proffesionally, mainly how to, and how not to run and event.

it is a shame that Battles are usually run by people who don't appreciate the musicians, because it is a really good idea and alot of young/inexperienced bands just want to get their foot in the industry door and play their music.

In closing I do think they are a good idea but have to be run by the right people. This comp sounds very suspect as does the organisers.

Hey guys, just wanted to clarify that Sound is not connected to Richard Sayer. I heard about his win and what he thought of the competition, and asked him to post about it here because of this discussion to give you guys a view from someone who took part and won. A few of you guys have been there, has anyone else participated? I haven't done either.

I would be willing to bet my first-born that Sound has some connection with Richard Sayer, but I guess that is just me. We played there.

The first show we played there was in October last year, we rocked the disco (I thought) and were told that we won, and that the final was in January.

We heard absolutely nothing from him. I waited throughout January for a call. I called early February to see when the final was. He told us it was the next week, "and I was just about to call you".

Bear in mind that this was supposedly the final, and was on a different date to the Final that Sound is referring to (weird, two different finals!).

We were told to arrive at 7pm, which we did, and were told we were playing at 9pm. Cool, we sipped back a couple beers and when 9pm came around we were ready to play. And then he tells us three more bands need to play, so we ended up playing at 11.30pm, hardly any friends had stayed because they had to work Friday.

Plain and simple, it sucked. Support the Indie Initiative. Neil's in it for the bands.
