Aussie Promotions Battle of the Bands.

NeilWedd 30 May 2003 13:25

I've had plenty of mostly bad reports about this Battle. Your thoughts appreciated.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

This competition is dodgy. Please note all bands! Im telling this from experience. The only way to win is if you get all your freinds to come and pay to watch to you play. Therefore the band that brings the most money to aussie promotions wins the comp. (they call this self promotion - pft)
My band entered and apparently we won on votes, but lost because</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I've only heard bad reports too. But then again, who could name the last Battle of the Bands that was organised to discover talent? TysonNTB 30 May 2003 15:59

yeah, i think most bands in Melbourne have played at this battle. Its gay how u have to pay so much and that it gets judged on the amount of people u bring but its a fucken sweet venue, and i had alot of fun playing there. And there is always generally a good crowd there. Ithink if u have the money u should enta this battle, but a good battle to enter is the central club battle, and the freeza battles are cool</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Thunder 30 May 2003 16:54

Heed my advice- STAY THE HELL AWAY FROM IT
Here are my harrowing experiences. We played in the heat, semi-final and grand final (didnt win however). Should have gotten a video of all three but only ever saw one of them.
The week after we played the heat, Duane (an organiser) called me, having trouble finding judges, and asked me to judge another heat!!!! Anyone spot a conflict of interest?!?!?!
There was a band that followed us right through every round that played nothing but covers! no originality at all. Surely playing Bon Jovi in public should warrant immediate disqualification!
Just for getting into the grand final we were promised 2 gigs at the mercury lounge- never played one.
We were told before each gig we had a 20 minute or 4 song set. I even called them days beforehand to confirm this. At both the semi and grand finals, they told us 5 minutes before playing that it had changed to 15 minutes or 3 songs. Thanks for the early warning..... (note: we ended up getting disqualified because we played for 16 minutes)
I could have told you the winner of the grand final b4 any bands played. The winning band brought 250 people along and the next behind them had 120 people. Therefore, the judging was irrelevant, no other band stood a chance, and there was a serious overcrowding problem in the venue (glad there wasnt a fire). Basically, if you've got the money, you can buy your victory. You dont actually need to bring the people, just gotta buy the tickets.
Got an email from Aussie Promotions last week asking if we were interested in competing again this year............</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Jamontoast 30 May 2003 19:05

The big problem is it isn't about the bands at all. We paid money to get fairly judged and we didn't get that at all. What we got was pushed around, thrown on and off stage and feeling fairly cheated out of the $50 we forked out just to play for 12 minutes. That's TWO songs. We didn't get any feedback at all from the judges, just whinged at by the guys who were running it because everyone was taking so long. Not worth the money or the effort in my view. If they want to improve it, make it more BAND orrientated. Give us time and a comfortable environment to show you what we can do. Don't tell us to get the fuck on and then get the fuck off.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

NICK7 30 May 2003 21:15

These guys are crooks. I have read all of the replies to Neil's discussion of Aussie Promotions and my band experienced the same shit. We even had the judges apologise to us that we didn't win, even though in their opinion we should have. Does that make sense? This is a dodgy marketing ploy, and if they tried it in any other industry they would have their legs broken. I think their catch-cry should go</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

tonyzee 30 May 2003 21:35

it may be a good venue to play at. but its dodgy promoters and not worth the money you pay for the bullshit you go through. All of the other replies from people is what happened to us and other bands i have spoken to. No gigs at the mercury lounge, no prizes... nothing. its bullshit. Duane should be shutdown. He is a dodgy con man who is full of it. I have heard other bad reports from people about him also. We ended up getting a video because i hassled them for it. But still....
not only that, Duane called me back about 2 weeks later to come back and i told him where to shove it. And only about 6 weeks ago (a year later) a girl rang to see if i wanted to enter again. I told her to get lost because i wanted nothing to do with this comp and that she will realise why after a few weeks of working there.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

oh yeh, and fair enough if they arnt many good battle of the bands around, but still, this one is full of crap. I had a mate who basically bought all his allocated tickets himself and his band won! I had a go at them on the night asking why the hell a cover band won and why we were told to play 4 songs and they only played 3. Some bullshit excuse about showing overall talent - pft my arse. and they call it self promotion. Crooks Is there anyway we can stop this sosgy Duane guy??? Namibia 31 May 2003 18:14

We just recently performed in this competition and got through the first round despite having brought only 8, of an expected 30 people, and thus having to pay $50 to play. We arrived at the second round expecting to play a 20 minute set but were told as we arrived that we would only be able to do 3 songs. Now we had gone out and sold all 30 of our tickets at $8 each, not to mention the $7 parking and the time and effort required in getting out to Colonial Stadium. So we decided, in fairness to our friends who were expecting a decent show for their cash, to pull out. We had to drive around Melbourne collecting all the tickets and get back to the Locker Room before the show started! It was a huge ordeal but we felt we had to stand up for ourselves. The organizers have crammed as many bands as they can into the one night, which generates money for the management but doesn’t give bands a fair opportunity to perform.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

NeilWedd 1 Jun 2003 10:41

How many people in this discussion have played the Indie Initiative? I've had bands say they can't to a gig because they have a Battle of The Bands to play. The only Battle that is any good is the Campus Battle. You would be better advised to come to the Indie Initiative and make the effort to get a gig.
If the II was supported by all the musicians then we could extend the opportunities to other places. Save your efforts for legitimate gigs. Having a successful gig is far better for you than winning a Battle of the Bands.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Tupelo 1 Jun 2003 16:41

I gotta say listen to that...
Out of one Indie Initiative gig, my band has gotten two more gigs at the Espy.
Far less friggen around, much more professional, you learn things, the venue doesn't get much better, and exposure is brilliant. I agree Neil, put the nrg into getting a gig like the Indie Init rather than BOB's...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

ChicoT 2 Jun 2003 11:28

The indie initiative is one of the best gigs we've played (and we played 70 gigs last year, we also played the campus band comp finals) and the espy was by far one of the most enjoyable and beneficial gigs. Don't worry too much about the band comps, you'll get far more from playing the espy, it sometimes seems as if young bands think they're gonna be big if they win a battle, they're not really worth that much effort to be honest.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Stay away from this competition, it is very dodgy. Here is my experience with it.
We entered the comp and were sent passes to sell to our friends for
$6 each. We decided no way and thought instead we'd just give them
the $50 or whatever.
On arrival we were told we could not do a soundcheck until we had
returned all our passes and paid our money. Performance times were
allocated in the order in which bands paid their money.
We were told we were forbidden from using our amps, but when we
arrived all they had for the guitars were two 12</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

grover 4 Jun 2003 15:49

inch practice amps,
which sounded shit. Our keyboard player asked for an extension lead
so we could fit on the inadequate stage and was told 'Nup' by the
engineer. Despite this the few bands that brought their own amps were
allowed to use them, although we had been repeatedly told on enquiry
that we couldn't do this.
Our performance time came; we had been told in advance that it was 20
min sets (so 5 songs if you really rush it). This was amended to 3
songs once the bands arrived. Not enough time to really show your stuff.
On the night we played there were thirteen (13)! bands on. This meant
that bands were playing from 8 until 2am and we couldn't leave as we
had to find out who won.
About 25% of the points were for 'costumes' and a further 25%
for 'stage presence'. What the fuck is that in a music competition
where half the marks are what you look like. Talk about scandal'us.
There was no crowd in attendance (despite the assurance of 'industry
interest') only the bands (and their parents and girlfriends in many
cases).
The MC was abusive towards the bands, for example one band played 4
short songs and he said 'Well they've just fucked themselves up the
arse for any chance of winning.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

who the hell are these people and how do they think they can get away with this shit. Is there something that can be done to force these people out of this scam they are perpetrating. I personally am not an advocate of any battle of the bands style competition for many reasons. Go see Neil and get a gig at the Indie Initiative on a Thursday. Its worth a hell of a lot more than one of these comp's and so much better for you confidence and self esteem to know that there are people out there who are genuine in their support for up and coming talent. I know i am too far away from Melbourne to put in my opinion about this subject specifically..but Battle of the Bands in General bother me..i have been a judge at many where i am..and i cant help feel that the results are taken too seriously by all the young bands..i have seen incredible talent...and dreams shattered...because they didnt win...my true belief is that the Battle of the Bands Concept is distructive in general....that the welfare of the bands isnt in fact important by the organisers..more the money making side of things....knowing that these bands will draw their freinds....

Contructive feedback is good, for bands learning the ropes and developing...but many who enter these competitions..are raw...as everyone is at the start...
sorry thats just my opinion

even on my radio show..i play 99% of material sent to me...as i have no right to judge...its up to the listeners...and everyone deserves a chance

we got a phone call from them a couple of days ago. seems as tho they may be having some trouble getting bands to play. we told them to stick it. it's so not worth the effort when u can do just as much running around and self-promo and see it pay off at the indie initiative. we got our record company interest from an II gig. believe me when i say the II is the best launching pad u could ask for. Neil Wedd is the man who can help u make it happen......</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Also had a call from the weird bearded man with a strange accent. told him my band from 4 years ago weren't together any more and he kept going! you in another band, the others in other bands!!! Did one at the Odeon for him at one nights notice cause a band had pulled out and got 35 people along, only to be beaten by a 14yr old cover band!! Indie initiative much better. Neil actually supports and cares about the bands and scene and not just making money!!!!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

OZBOX, your right on the money. Bands have to understand how to have a good fucking time first and foremost....then if after years of lugging and getting fucked over cash wise they're still writing good material, enjoying the experience, and still keen to make a splash, that's when satisfaction kicks in!! Book your own fucking life!!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

In regards to the Rush Bar competition this letter comes from Alan Griffith from UEG.
Alan is a great guy and is very supportive of the scene. I will vouch for him to anybody.

Dear Mary+Claire,
I am in back in Australia and my girl in Australia gave to me today a copy of ''Beat Magazine''
In it on Page 57 was a ad for a 2004 Australian Rock Challenge.I wish to state very clearly and categorically that UEG is not involved nor has ever been in this promotion nor I in my capacity.I have no idea of who these people are and they certaintly never made a approach to LA or me to use the UEG name and are using the name in a manner detrimental to what UEG is all about.
I wish for a disclaimer and have left a very terse message with these people who have yet to return my call.
Do you have by any chance a email address on these people.
Kind Regards
Alan A Griffith

Duane from Aussie Promotions is a totally bogus operator who should be selling used cars instead of ripping off bands. I actually had to chase up the prize money for a band who won the competition...there was supposed to be a recording studio adventure (never happened) and some other prizes that also were never presented. In the end I valued all the supposed promises at about $700 and cornered him in his sleazy office in Carlton...he finally paid up, but was very unhappy about it. DON'T PERPETUATE THIS SCAM BY BEING INVOLVED WITH AUSSIE PROMOTIONS IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Being a member of a band who entered the Australian Rock Comp 2004 held at the Rush Bar on Toorak Rd, I have to say I'm not surprised that the comp itself is an utter crock of shit.

Firstly - the cost to the bands and members of the audience. Each band must pay a $50 compulsory entry fee. Now $50 may not seem a great amount of money when split between 4 people, but it certainly sounds like an odd charge considering most battle of the band competitions are either free entry or at a minimal cost. On top of this charge is the entry charge audience attendees must pay which is at a whopping $15 for a FIRST heat!! This is a far cry from the usual $2 donation encountered at, for example, a National Campus Battle of the Bands.

Even so, the inflated costs are not the major issue here - it's the lack of relevance in feedback comments handed back to each band by the judges. Comments such as "...good to see you are using musical colours to strengthen your songs..."... what the?? and "You're all great in your own write"... write or right?? So, apparently we are all great in our own right but our over all score was well below average. Oh the contradiction. It would not surprise me if each score had been randomly generated by a pocket calculator ... considering the apparent absence of one of the judges for the last band on that night...DODGY. Obviously the seriousness or more so the competence of the judges used is well BELOW acceptable.

As a final note, the world is full of money hungry loosers who have never really captured or understood the true meaning of music, and seemingly, it always will be (for the entirety of my life-time any-way). But it's a bands inability to recognise dodgy dealings that fuels the actions of the perpetrators.
Thanks.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

i'm starting to think most if not all battles are a waste of time. it's so hard when you're a muso believing in yourself...you don't need a bunch of judges telling you you suck (let the public decide that! - kidding).

We played in that competition, and while we had a good time as it was our first gig, I've gotta say bullshit was the order of the day. Whoever was mixing didn't have great live rock band knowledge, and then we get our scores, and they've given us a good ol' trashing. I actually happened to think our songs were pretty damn good, and played fairly tightly. But what would I know eh? I'm just a musician.

Bottom line, if you were in that comp and didn't win, forget about it. Keep on doing what you believe in.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
