Paper Street's Greyhound gig review!!!! Who is james bean?

frank 10 Jun 2004 16:17

Please read the review of Paper streetís most recent gig on this site then read this.

I know critics have their job to review shows, but oneís like this annoy me. A mate of mine asked me to come down to this show as he had heard a bit about this band on this site and in local street press.

I thought the gig was impressive. The large crowd, the atmosphere and the sounds all combined to give me what I wanted from a live gig. Iíll leave it up to others who were there as well, to say what they think and analyse it musically, I enjoyed it, but my issue is with the reviewer.

James bean in his own pretentiousness has written a review in words few will fully understand to demonstrate his apparent mastery of the English language and while I understand what he was saying, it in no way reflects what I saw in that band and that show.

Reading his review incensed me so much I had a look at a number of other reviews written by James. One in particular stood in my mind, his review Icarus Line, Degrees.k by James Bean at Ding Dong Fri 21 May and I quote:

ďLetís discuss disaffected, benign crowds that donít give a shit, and demonstrate no empathy whatsoever for the young bastards or birds up there flogging their guts out for forty-five minutes. What in Hestonís Mosesí shocked-locks gees people up thesedays?!Ē

Where is his empathy?

James feels that it is unjust for the crowd above not to demonstrate any empathy for the effort band members go through in putting on shows, but he feels that he as a writer can trash a band who have probably worked longer than the 45 minutes it takes to do a set, to get their band where they are, launching their EP and playing entertaining shows to significant crowds.

While the lack of empathy displayed by the crowd at ding dong is tiny in comparison to that shown by this critic whose overwritten, pompous review has a far greater audience and effect on a bandís reputation being posted on a website with a large audience, than a crowd of disinterested punters will.

Someone who appears to be so intelligent surely would not forget what he writes and contradict himself from review to review and while bands who put themselves in the public arena deserve to be and want to be reviewed, there is more intelligent and objective ways to do this.

Jamesí obvious efforts to get himself recognised as a writer and critic by trying to differentiate his works by submitting convoluted and over the top reviews is sad.

I am not a writer or a master of English, I am a punter who wants to read honest objective reviews of music, not self-promoting, conceited, unnecessary slander of original, independent Australian music.

Hug a hater today!

i hear he writes for some street press, but it doesn't really matter, who he is, there are many better ways to write a critical review.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Hi,

Well James Bean wrote a Jeckyl and Hyde review of my band "The Fallen" in this weeks Inpress. He obviously wrote some great things about our singer Beck. That is great. I don't mind him having a dig but I think it went a little too far. Read the review and tell me what you think. A couple of things. He has in a verbose round about fashion accused me of boring the audience and not really communicating.

Well in stark contrast James Bean writes in a street press mag aimed at the general public. However I would assume that by his "mastery" of the english language he hasn't picked up on that or has decided to blatantly disregard this. His constant postscripidentialprolexity (tendancy to use long words) and his ability to not use the vernacular (the language of the common people) shows total disregard for his audience.

When I first read this review I gave it more cred than it deserved. I then went and did my reasearch and read other reviews. He has an awkward writing style for most people.

So my advice for James is that when writing prose there is only one rule. Keep it simple and keep it rule. Your audience does not appreciate reaching for their dictionary three times in every paragraph. We can all so off our skill at using the english language. Good communicators get the job done simply in a manner that everyone can comprehend in a short amount of time.

As a musician I am on stage to communicate with my audience. I must do this in a medium that most people don't always understand as well as I think I do. So I have to try and put it in a framework that they can understand. So to a writer must make it easy for people to follow.

I read the review that you mentioned about Ding Dong. James spent more time crapping on about the venue than the artist. It was supposed to be a review of the artist not Ding Dong. If people want that sort of a review there are directories and websites dedicated for this.

My 2c worth.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Wow, im not even sure if James is saying they were good or bad??? i dont understand that review at all!!
Despite what any reviews may or may not say i thought the gig was one of the best i have seen them play.
I think they only thing i understood in the review was the fact that james categorised them as hardcore.........i dont think this fits paperstreet at all.
But really im agreed, whats the point in writing a review if no-one can undertand it?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

James can write obtusely at times. Sometimes I don't run the reviews because they say nothing. I argue with him about the language.
But it provokes interest and its a free press.
Send in your reviews and I'll look at them and maybe put them on the site.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

James Bean . The world is so full of guys just like you, who probably got a bit too close to the teacher in grade one. it was probably your mum. The reason i say this is that you choose to hide behind big words. Why not just say what you think about a band, you like or not! not just this mindless dribble of crap to try and justify your yuppie attitude. Dont worry im sure that out there there is still a grop of primary school girls who think that you rock even if you dont even know a thing about a band.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I don't mind his writing actually, it provokes thought, and breaks rules. He's taking a lot of the creative risks that many bands are failing to take. Kudos to him. He's also a Mars Volta fan so he's got good taste in music in my books.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Provokes thought? The only thought of mine that was provoked was that I would like to grind his nerdy little head into the footpath. If you are going to review bands then cut the shitand do it.Band was good......why???Band was crap.....Why?I like to read band reviews.I don't like to read over-educated dribble that leaves me asking the question......so, what did this guy really think of the band?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
