Election - Labor vs. Liberal - vote for the republic, vote Labor!

maharb 5 Oct 2004 01:30

Just remember, that when you cast a vote for Liberal you’re casting a vote for the party that sabotaged the referendum to ensure Australia would not be established as a republic and hence take control of our identity; a party that refused to allow people refuge on dry land for a short period, people whom had been through the tribulation of a harsh sea voyage after fleeing their impoverished country, then proceeded to wrongly inform the nation that they were savages because they threw their children overboard; a party that refuses to allow gay marriage, yet also refuses to acknowledge that they are aligned to Christian fundamentalists; a party that chose to cover up the lack of evidence for the Iraqi conflict; a party that wants university education to be far more accessible to the rich; a party that has increased taxation to a level higher than any govt has ever done; a party that once allowed Pauline Hanson as their candidate; a party that introduced Import and Tariff policies which allowed for increased market penetration of pirated music and movies which allows illegal vendors to prosper while our local music industry suffers due to reduced funding; a party that refuses to allow the government of the day to apologise for the injustices caused in the ‘stolen generation affair’ as a peace offering on behalf of the ruling government of the past; a party that encouraged illegal labour hire practises that would prevent hard working Australians the opportunity to work, if they were a member of a workers rights association; a party that does not punish its fellow Liberal parliamentary members for fraudulent use of taxpayers money; a party whereby the leader refuses to categorically state he will lead the full term if elected …

Of all these reasons to vote out Liberal, they are just a few, but one reason which we all have an opportunity to stand against the obstinacy of the Liberal party, is our right to stand for a republic. We as individuals can make a stand for the republic, so Australia can stand proud and embrace our history and culture, leaving behind the Queen and country and head forth into the new Millennium. Labor is the only party with a republic model for Australia. The Liberal party has made no policy to the public that will cater for a republic. John Howard is to blame for the downfall of the last referendum, as well as Australia’s ignorance and yesteryear attitude. An attitude which you’d expect from a one-eyed, coalition loving, pig farmer in middle-Queensland, whose intellectual contribution to society is contained within a tale he recounts at the local in-bred drinking hole, of the day he came up with the idea to use his pitch-fork as a backscratcher, which no doubt under Liberal’s foolhardy business grants scheme, probably allocated tax payer funds to develop his idea further.

I’m not going to let an aging society dictate the future of mine and the next generation.

Our republic is our future!

Vote Labor for Australia’s future!

maharb 6 Oct 2004 19:25

Mitch04, it definitely is. I propose to you, a music enthusiast and hopefully a live music enthusiast, can you name anything that a liberal regime, be it federal, state or council has done for the preservation and development of artistic expression ie. musically - in a pop-culture, independent or live 'non-concerto' environment ..??? still waiting...nothing. The only thing any liberal supporter has done for live music is probably the liberal supporting fat cats and Channel's nine and seven funding popstars and australian idol.
All we've seen under Howard and further extended community liberal-mentality governance is increased piracy, encroaching boundaries for live music venues to operate as intended, commercialisation due to exploitation ie. Bush style, lower funding for local artists forcing our finest OS, and GST (forcing artists to get ABN's complete BAS's - give us the cash mate!)
Agree that this forum is for music, however their has been some impetus and directed expression by the local music community this year against Howard, and I agree, so didn't think it was entirely out of place.
Please just tell me you won't vote 'family first'?

Dear System,
Are you being anti?
No need to antagonise. This is a forum for discussion, not a platform for small minded, hostile character bashing. I am far from pompous and several generations removed from being a git. If you won't to vote for the right wing sect of the Anglican or Catholic Church with an 18th century mindset, vote Family First! : then down the track when they are exposed and publicly ridiculed, you will be tainted with the memory that you supported them.

However, each to their own and good luck numbering boxes for the FF :)

Ok here's the deal, I'm a youngin (19 years old) and this will be my first time voting. I am asking sincerely here, please don't take this in any way as patronising or cynical, but what have/will the other parties offer(ed) in supporting the live music scene? It seems this election campaign has been dominated by health and defence. If anyone can fill me in on any past policies to do with the music/entertainment scene I would be greatly appreciative.

The erosion of live music venues, the noise level restrictions and the getrification of inner city dwellings has all occured under 'Steve Bracks'...State Labor party.

These petty laws, restrictions and anti-live music postuerings are all the result of Labors pandering to the Yuppy professionals buying up inner city investment dwellings and then complaining to the councils about noise, parking, under-age youth etc...
Bracks lines labors pockets with the tax results and shafts the local music scene in the arse.

So tell me again how much Labor gives a damn about us?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

maharb 7 Oct 2004 09:31

Touche to you System. Pay that one. But I guess I won't retract it as middle Queensland and their rural cousins across the nation were decidedly prominent in ensuring our republic referendum was quashed, so am still seething.

I think you'll find that initiatives such as AUSMUSIC etc were started under a labor govt. But it's not the State government that makes final decisions on housing projects in our inner-city sanctuaries. The Kennett administration paved the way for an evergrowing inner-city development, which inturn has been embraced by the local councils, who see fit to take down music establishments due to noise or realestate holdings, without considering that people want to reside there for the cultural activities and location. Unfortunately the residents will later be starved of entertainment because the developers have 'managed' to win over councillors to get the building approvals and eventually take down the live venues. This effects our tourism and our ability to support local music on mass. Little effort has been made by many developers to embrace the culture and work around it.
Labor has a strong social conscience and is more likely to support the arts movement than our current administration who is only concerned about what battle cruisers to buy next so we can help the loose-cannon Texan, invade another country and then state publicily a year later that they were wrong.

Anyway enough of my bantering, Mitch04 and System, I doubt that either of you will be voting Liberal so I extend to you a congratulatory cheer from my little forum box:)</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

system 7 Oct 2004 10:08

I think you're simply whitewashing over the State Labor parties accountability for their prominate role in the erosion of the grassroots music scene.

Labor pay lip service to the arts and play 'Pontious Pilate' when it comes to the crunch "Nothing WE can do about it, it's the federal goverments fault...but we'll gladly accept the revenue and diminish our role in it's departure.

Look..if the majority want Liberal then so be it....we will have to work within that framework to bring change to our music scene.

If Labor win I hope it's because the majority believe that a change is nessasary and we are collectively willing to suffer the financial and social burden of an economic hardship to make that happen...and not because a few soapboxers want a symbolic republic.

For the record , I'll definetly be voting Independant....you can say it's a wasted vote...but for me it's a moral one....and I will sleep at night because of it.

The re-gentrification has occurred because interest rates got low and people loved the ambience that the inner city offers.
Of course they didn't want the noise.
They have driven us of what we created and now can't afford. Maybe we should blame the Labor party for making it too easy for people to get university educations, thus becoming professionals who want to live close to work...
Maybe the Liberals were right all along....make uni fees prohibitively high so more people would seek alternative careers in trades and move out into the outer suburbs and leave in the inner city to those that want their cake and eat it too......

system 7 Oct 2004 12:06

I was being ironic...in response to Neils blinkered view of the world.

The question isn't about who can now afford to invest in inner city dwellings (and let's face it..it's young urban professionals and not suburban families)but what measures are in place to safeguard the vitality of the music scene...and that responsibilty ultimatly lies with the State goverment who are have made woefully inadequate concessions.

We want to retain our vibrant local music scene but do we want to turn into Nazis protecting it?
</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

maharb 7 Oct 2004 12:59

The 25-35 year old's being they singles or couples, wed or unwed, definitely populate the inner-city dwellings and can afford as Neil put, to take on a mortgage in an apartment whereas in the past that mortgage would have been better suited to a surburban lot. The thrill of the lifestyle, which offers a huge array of eateries, bars etc is all good if thats what you want, but it has, as we all agree, had a negative impact on the live music venues, especially rock'n'roll. Now is that what the occupants intended?

As a rock enthusiast I submitted an article to the Live Music Taskforce, a taskforce which as I understand is making concessions and working in tandem with authorities to protect the live scene. Effectively it must be a give and take prospect and I trust the advocates of this Taskforce are doing their job well.

However, what better way to make live music stay, than to see an abundance of new talent, delivering fantastic material to an eager audience, which creates the demand for live shows. Programs such as indieinitiative etc are good for live music, however unfortunately there will be a battle for the underage scene which would be a huge loss due to one foolish incident.

If musicians deliver the goods for the public ears, if record companies support and promote talent, you would think it would become increasingly harder for any authority to lay restraints on the going concern of live music operaters.

Should the responsibilty of supporting our live scene, first be put back on music industry workers / particpants? Everyone from from musicians, sound engineers, managers right through to the people sticking promotional posters on street light poles should actively get out and support the scene that is ultimately paying their bills. Fans come and go and are discretionary patronisers. Those involved in the industry need to nuture not only their peers but their careers.

Maybe we need initiatives from venues to encourage more industry attendance, I don't know 10% of the bar if you're in the biz??? Maybe we need to encourage the inner-city dwellers as well; "Come down tonight and be in the crowd for our live music video" could be a pamphlet placed in the mailbox at apartment 409?

But if the industry gets behind their industry buddies, the hype starts and the fans start rolling in and the venues can afford to invest more in development of their live scene to accomodate patrons etc.

Cementing live music with a solid culture, which in Melbourne we are extremely fortunate to have, would have to be a great defense against any organisation trying to make a quick buck against the establishment that is our rock'n'roll scene.

btw - i think family first is one of those anti abortion / evengelist bunch of freaks who's policies centre around "christian values"

..political parties who hide behind religion are usually the more radical / stupid / dangerous in my opinion, don't get sucked in by innocuous names</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Buying an Asian lady-boy from overseas doesn't qualify for having a family.

But ofcourse Family First are fine for non-progressive, cross burning types.

Maybe if they get elected we will have a Bible-Jihad and resurrect the Christian Crusades. Maybe it will start in Tasmania and spread across the globe. First they'll turn all kebab shops into fish'n'chip take aways and then proceed to hook up with American Christian Militant groups in Michigan to take down the Bush regime...hmmm, I wonder???

Well Neil, you may like these two articles -

1. This is who the Liberals are swapping prefernces with, you guessed it, Family First, and what a nice bunch of people they are ...
http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11004623%255E36596,00.html

2. And John Howard's Immigration policy is shaping Australia's stance on Human Rights with this recent High Court decision. Thanks midget man Howard, for making our country an avid fan of human rights ... maybe we should be hosting Iraqi prisoners in the dungeons of the High Court, it would be like they never left American custody ...
http://www.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,4057,11008869%255E421,00.html

Go Libs, I wouldn't be surprised if Howard and Costello took turns sucking out Abbotts kidney stone through his rectum as it is no different to their debaucherous, hard nosed, right wing elitist, savage healthcare parliamentary policies.

There's no point in ridiculing the libs for taking Family First preferences when Labor are doing the same with the freaky Greens.

And Disco...you don't have to be religious to be anti-Abortion...some people consider it a vital human rights issue.

Green's Policy -

"Save the tree's and end the war!"

Family First policy -

"Lesbians are witches that should be burned at the stake!"

The Green's are the lesser of two evils wouldn't you say?
</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

system 8 Oct 2004 16:26

So by that logic you should be voting for the libs.....lol

C'mon ..the Greens economic policy is half a page long written in mud on the back of some old growth bark.

You're berating one extreme and then endorsing another....
The GREENS don't have a monopoly on enviromental concerns, they simply put these concerns above people, jobs, and common sense with a ultra rabid condemnation of anyone who doesn't fall into line with their extremist views.....very similar to burning Lesbians at the stake.

The Greens manifesto reads like a 'Noddy goes to Toytown' book.

Ok guys and girls, the election has been run and won by the liberals and if any of you people voting for the first time with all you know about life coming from your uni books or some drug induced stupor can relax for a while you will see that niether party has done anything to directly affect music. It is you and how many Australian cd's you buy or shows you see or tracks you download for free that are to blame.Sure,I hate people living in the city and complaining about bands and closing down venues but voting for labor or liberal wont change a thing.Only you and I can</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

maharb 12 Oct 2004 12:13

Well they do represent a less progressive view than metropolitan voters as a whole, and metropolitan people in the country are getting older and older as well. Whilst campaigning on Saturday I confronted many obsinate senior members who refuse to offer an open mind.

I know country folk aren't all bad, and my views probably are related to a fringe or minority of the rural sector.

Unfortunately with all this in tow, we could be heading towards mass conservatism which is extremely scary and will affect us all. This is something I believe is worth criticising.

Our democratic process has failed and has allowed the potential for the Liberal regime to run a dictatorship on policies and legislation without opposition in parliament. Which is why I was emphatic about a vote for labor as it was the only party to prevent it. Unfortunately the country has again failed, in my view, to adopt a progressive government.

It seems like you're suffering a classic case of sour grapes.

maybe :(

But with 200+ Ministers/Senators being paid with our taxes all to debate topics which can be rubber stamped anyway, it's disappointing that MP's and Senators now have less of a chance of representing their electorate's and 48% of the Australian people.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

The most successful supporters of tyranny are without doubt those general declaimers who attribute the distresses of the poor, and almost all the evils to which society is subject , to human institutions and thr iniquity of goverments.

It amazes me that people with no idea or alternative strategies continue to be sour grapes.FACE FACTS our democracy voted by the majority of aussies did not want a labour govt headed by mark latham to run and represent us.Now you might not agree with everything Howard does and you may strongly disagree with somethings but unless your prepared to get off yor fat arse and run for a seat yourself and put forward policies and costings and balance the budget ($400billion p/a) then I suggest you accept and wait for 3 tears and in the meantime campaign for an alterative.ie yourself.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Well Supavillain, perhaps you fail to recognise that supporting an opposition party does advocate new ideas and policies to govern the nation.

Maybe you and System could raise some funds and give me $200K and I'll run in the next election. With a name like Supavillain you could be a fantastic front-bencher as our Minister for Defence.

Well for your info maharb,Yes we need opposition which is exactly what latham gave us only we werent convinced.Honestly, his policies were transparent ,revealing huge gaps in the budget, etc but he has made howard take notice and adopt some ideas. But this is politics and its dirty so dont expect the Libs to fall on their sword to soon. They simply adapt and move on.Labour has got to become a unified coherent group with new forward thinking, not the whitlam of old</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
