Neil's Reviews

KGrammer 8 Oct 2004 17:42

I never thought I'd bag out someone who appears to be doing so much for Indie bands, but Neil - get some writing skills. It is true, you are entitled to your opinion and I'm sure the many bands you have lauded with praise are extremely grateful for your words - but what poorly chosen words they. Are. Because. You. Over. Use. Full. Stops.

"The bass player gets right into it. Pulling some great moves. The sumo stomp, one leg at a time planted down firmly on the tage. Then doing little jumping dances." - what? Why did you bother wasting all these words on Simon London's bass player, and then give so little attention to the following two bands.

From a journalistic standpoint, if you are going to write a review, make it clear it is YOUR opinion, eg. 'Indie Inpress Initiative Review by Neil Wedd'. It is no shame to admit you are a biased listener - everyone is, even those without 'thirty five years of listening to music and over twenty in working with musicians' - great music is in the ear of the listener.

Addendum: Simon London and his band were the most professional outfit I have seen for some time, but their songs left alot to be desired - the ability is definitely there, but Eskimo Joe do what you do better. Take one or two of the songs you had last night and write some fresher ones.
Spargo was a great band with enormous potential, I can see their songs (particularly the ones Neil Wedd did not enjoy) growing on a wide audience, much like the latest Finn album did for me.
Forty Five Degrees sound like a great band from the 70s, excellent riffs and some really tasteful harmonies, but they need to take some how-to-dress lessons from their bass player - the others look very unsure of what to wear. Also, the singer did not seem relaxed with his moves or his banter, and this took away from the show somewhat; that said, this band too has alot of potential in my eyes and ears (currently, more in the ears).

Now, Neil, try constructing a review for next week in which the thoughts and ideas flow together as more logical sentences, and don't think for a moment that this criticism is an assault on your passion for helping Indie bands, particularly the ones you like.

Oh yeah - Nick Cester? Jet? Die Die Die? Who cares! I thought the idea was to review the bands that played AT the Indie Initiative? Leave your sentimentality and personal endorsements for another column!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

If you want to write the reviews then send them in. Happy to get a different viewpoint.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

There's nothing wrong with short sentences. It's merely another style of writing. Sometimes long sentences lose people's attention, therefore I think that Neil makes his point clearly unlike a lot of other ego-infected pompous reviewers.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

The short sentences are to help out the drummers out there.

I agree with ChicoT.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Congratulations to Stuart Jacobs on writing what I thought was a far more even-handed appraisal of last week's Indie Initiative; I could not have agreed with your comments more. I look forward to reading more of your work in the future.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
