I caught 72 Blues the other night, and they had me mesmerised from first sleazy chord to last! I'm struggling to find shit I really dig these days, and these guys/gal got me all hot and sweaty. Uh-huh! And no, I'm not in the band!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Can't stop listening to Kashmir's 'Zitilites' released early this year. Brilliant! Locally, I'm loving the redsunband's work, also Love Outside Andromeda's debut album.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

voxvox 18 Nov 2004 14:11

Degrees K are one of my favourites at the moment. The song Worth it, from the "Children of The Night Sky" release especially. Gene is a brilliant lyricist, "listen to the rails, they're thrumming". The clip too, was so cool and yet was not put on high rotation on T.v.
I just don't get it. I was surfing between three channels last Sat. morning and there were three U.S Rap/ R and B clips which, apart from Outcast, were all pretty uninspiring. I am going off the topic but if commercial T.v programmers realised that Australians like watching the rise of the underdogs,( hence success of Idol shite), the viewing base would expand. Commercial Television should have Sat and Sunday slots devoted to the local band scene: (God I miss Recovery). They should also be getting out and asking people what bands they're into. I believe if Australia was given the oppurtunity to show more support, it would. Australians don't really need a foreign stamp of approval to get behind local talent, hopefully mainstream radio and T.V will realise this so bands like Degrees K can show what they have to the masses and then hopefully be able to afford to keep doing what they do so well.

DaJones 18 Nov 2004 14:40

Yeah Degrees K are pretty good live especially. Up there with the better live shows. Don't know about their studio stuff though.

The Fragments are good. Love Outside Andromeda. Interpol.

But jesus- are there any bands out there that write more than guitar songs. and i don't mean your guitar rock with a little bit of textured backing. i mean actual non-electronic non-faggy delta goodrem style songs which go against the standard guitar rock at the moment. hence the reason i have mentioned the fragments with their piano/guitar single.
any others then please let me know</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Puerto 18 Nov 2004 14:51

This should definetly be broken up into favorite aus acts and favorite international acts.
I would have to say after the fall, gyroscope and an awesome two bands i caught recently being trial kennedy and mere theory, loving them all, so much great local music around</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

MasterB8 18 Nov 2004 20:59

YES! That song 'The King Must Die' by 26 was absolutely brilliant. Can't wait to hear that again. Now there is a band not totally caught up in guitar rock.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Jemwitch 19 Nov 2004 15:08

any bands not caught up in guitar rock?! Fuck man. Look around. They don't get the press support of course.
Black Level Embassy kick ass. Spider Goat Canyon are another. They're fuckin' everywhere.

MasterB8 19 Nov 2004 16:13

yeah, it is a bit sad. i think when the 60's rock revival finally dies, II will be a little less important. or maybe it too will evolve to promote acts outside of the narrow genre it is interested in.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

caught a band at greyhound last wed 'The brillant fanzine' or just 'brilliant fanzine'??? a bit rough round the edges but very 'new order'. DaJones 23 Nov 2004 11:34

My point exactly Jemwitch. Non guitar-obsessed bands don't get much in the way of press/airplay. Fucking pathetic isn't it. Black Level Embassy you say. Heard of them but not actually heard them. They from Melbourne I assume? Am from Sydney so excuse the current ignorance. Will look them up.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

my fave bands at the moment are brides of destruction (o/s) and from oz...hmmm...too hard to say as there hasnt been anything that has really grabbed me lately that i can think of off the top of my head. not to say that there isnt plenty of great stuff out there....maybe that is the problem!!!!! too many good bands!!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Peeping Tom, Fire Witch, The Nation Blue, Degrees K and Dr Invisiablo shine through the thick haze of unimaginative "let's go backwards instead of forwards" shit that dominates the local industry at this time.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

johnnyrock 25 Nov 2004 02:16

there's nothing wrong with 60's influenced rock. unlike other decades including our current one that have such a defined produced sound of the era, 60's is all about being organic and actually making the sound of your instrument on the record sound like it does live, rather than some synthy crap. makes it timeless i think.

anyway my top bands are in no particular order...

the 22-20's. very organic you can hear the passion in every note.

the new electric who have members of pornland. very awsome funk and increible live show.

von bondies. even though their last gig in melb sucked they definitly had the 'it' factor 6 months ago.

the hovercrafts. excellent vocals, geetars, pressence, liveshow. just plain great on many levels.

red riders from sydney, can be haunting yet wonderfully enegetic.

the pictures. have everything going for them. never seen a gig that wasn't mind blowing.

rocket science. - Ronnan will get his jive back and when he does they will be unstoppable.

78 saab also from sydney used to be power pop in the best possible way. new album is a much more layed back affair but it just makes you want to hear the songs over and over again.

the Go! team from the UK. if you could get a highschool concert band on mushrooms and got a cheerleading squad to sing while on speed you would come close to the sound of this band. best summer album ever!

Accessory- my band. our new songs will blow audiences away. if you don't think your own band is the best in the world why do you bother playing at all? ; )

"shameless side" are cool.
"pictures" get a vote.
"the vascoe era" i've also seen a couple of times recently.
i saw "mistamash" at the espy front bar on wed night. fuck they were good. second time i've seen them.
there's so many great bands in and around melb at the moment, it's actually a challenge to keep tabs! Just when you think someone is awesome, you go to an indie init or another gig, and then someone else blows you away...
good to be alive.

Yeah 'fuckstab' rock. How many death metal bands out there can say they've never had a drummer or bassist. Theirs only two of them and they both play guitar.
Rumour has it, their debut E.P 'Go and get fuck stabbed' is almost completed.

KISSINGERS, MAJESTICHEAD, SUNNY DISPOSITION at the Duke Of Windsor …. 4th Dec 2004

Well, I’d read some very positive reports about the KISSINGERS and heard a few rumours to the effect that they were something special.

I was familiar with some of their recorded work and had been quite impressed.

I’d tangled with their guitarist, Liam Firmager, on the internet on matters ranging from terrorism to domestic politics and I’d banned them from the playlist of my radio show FOR TWO WHOLE WEEKS as a result.

But nothing could have possibly prepared me for what I witnessed at the Duke of Windsor last night.

What I saw, up on that stage, was the sheer joy of the ancient art of PERFORMANCE.

MUSICIANS AND BANDS TAKE NOTE:

Melbourne has many excellent bands of all genres … and non-genres, producing world-class recordings and struggling for recognition in a city where there are more musicians than punters.

My living space is rapidly being overtaken by a steadily growing collection of their recorded works.

But why should I get off my fat middle-aged arse and trek across the river to see a live gig when I can just put their CD on in my living room and enjoy a nice cuppa tea in the dignified comfort of my own humble environment?

Why indeed?

Well, two seconds into the KISSINGERS’ set I had my answer.

From the opening bounce it was on for young and old … and I do mean the opening “bounce”.

Singer, Darran McCrann, was like a jack-in-the-box, with a particular penchant for the pogo … the dance that arose from the old-school punk days. By the end of the gig he even had the audience jumping in the air with him, including this somewhat undignified fat middle-aged radio presenter, who then had to surreptitiously retrieve the small change that fell out of his shirt pocket.

Musically, the KISSINGERS would appear to draw their principal inspiration from the era immediately following the aforementioned old-school punk days … the era in which the wheat was sorted from the chaff … and the “new wave” emerged.

The most exciting performers of this era were just that … PERFORMERS. They really put it out … there … right in front of you.

They gave you a reason to be there … and not sitting at home drinking tea.

I think it’s been over 20 years since I’ve seen anyone put it “out … there” quite like the KISSINGERS did last night.

McCrann and Firmager are a great double-act. Apparently they go back a long way … and it shows. They work off each other brilliantly as they draw the audience into their spell.

And they’re versatile too. They play BOTH kinds of music … the nice smiling good time pop of songs like “Higher” … and the EVIL Kissingers style of “Police” or “Moon”. The EVIL side is flavoured largely by the sinister synth sounds from keyboard player, Nicola Barnes, and driven along by a "war criminal" rhythm section direct from the RAAF. Steve Temple, the burly and surly bass player, who looks like he’s flown a few shock-and-awe missions in his time, was apparently making his first appearance with the band. As a first-time Kissingers’ audience member, I never would have picked it. He slotted in magnificently … seamlessly … and faultlessly.

That is one hell of a rhythm section.

But the big surprise for me was McCrann … I just can’t get over his performance.

Last I heard, Stevie Wright was still alive, so he can’t be the reincarnation … so, who IS this man? And why the hell did the performance gods give him such an unfair share of the talent? He was that good, I want to cry.

DAMN !

The pogo soon gave way to something much more sensual and sublime. He moves like a smiling reptile reincarnated as a shaman … and it’s all masterfully measured.

I’ve always liked his voice, but to really appreciate him, you’ve just GOTTA SEE HIM.

LOL....I'm not Dr Grouse....just someone you met breifly at the Duke gig...
I was BLOWN AWAY by you guys.....seriously Grousy is right about your band, probably the best band I've seen in YEARS.
Keep it up Pangas, you're band is one of the reasons I haven't completely given up hope on the local music scene.
I don't know the in's & outs on why The Kissingers are not signed...but if it's lack of interest from labels then the music scene in Australia needs to take a GOOD LONG HARD LOOK at itself.

Good luck guys, you've won me over.

gotta love it...

Are The Kissingers too clever?..perhaps they should 'dumb down' & start re-hashing 60's riffs like the billion other bands in Melbourne...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

The Kissingers sounds like a promising band. There seems to be a lot of good things said about them but not a lot of action. Haven't they been around for a while? Where's their cover story on the street press?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I too caught the Kissingers set at the Duke and was well impressed with their sound and delivery. Also like Majestic Heads album, blues-folk-rock, very cool.
