Help! Trying to get a good lead sound with a Fender Twin

davetele 20 Feb 2005 22:24

Hi, Ive got a Fender Twin and am playing an American Series Tele through it. I currently use either the amp's gain channel or my Proco Vintage Rat for playing lead. I am trying to get a nice gain/distortion sound. I'm a big fan of buckland's sound (from Coldplay). My band is playing Emo/Pop rock with a lot of lead lines and riffs and my current setup is just not ballsy enough.

I have been toying with the idea of putting a humbucker in the tele as i love the action and play of that guitar.

anyone got any advice on a good setup or pedals you can reccommend? Cheers!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I don't think your guitar is the issue dude.

Not having ever owned a Twin my experience is through my singer/guitarist in the band having one.
He got rid of his for similar problems though. Dunno if its a trait of the amp but for ballsy / overdriven licks and melodies, it just didn't cut it. He uses Rics too.
I don't know Coldplays backline but I hope you didn't emulate their gear thinking you'd get the same sounds.
Assuming the amp has been checked out valves, circuitry & Speaker(s) - Piss it of and get a VOX or Laney AC/VC series amps for starters. :p

Check around here for info http://www.harmony-central.com/Guitar/
if you haven't already.

Maybe try a Mesa boogie v-twin or pedal rocket pedal.
Also look at orginal Tube Screamer

Heres a recording article and he uses a twin and a rat?

Do some more google searches... If you have a live dvd look at see.
Although remember a lot of a players tone is them.

Yeh I do like to look at what other artists are using in terms of gear, and im sure it influenced my selection somewhat ...

But, it was the clean throaty sound of the twin I always liked. But now realising with overdriven lead work - it just doesnt cut it. (BTW The Vox ac30 was also high on my list of amps to buy too!)

Anyways, cheers for the advi ce guys - appreciated.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

hey man,

if your looking for more a more ballys sound for leads and riffs, check out Boss "Compression/Sustain" Pedal (it's the cool blue one)- crank the level, tone, attack and sustain - no shit you'll find a great building block for presence and tone.

oh - and don't pay more than 120 for it.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Also the twin with distortion is different then the normal twin with vibrato. There are also like most amps different types.

one of the best sounds I had was with a v-twin and bandmaster(sim to twin) head</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

mmm that mesa looks nice! I tried looking on the harmony central forums, but everyone seems to either be bagging the crap out of something, or praising the super espensive gear THEY already have! A kid in college with 3 amps - two being fenders and one a mesa?? Go away please!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Try a Marshall "Guv'nor" distortion pedal. Great vintage marshall tone and will have some nice bottom end. I played a Fender amp for many years and my one criticism of them was they were a bit lacking in bottom end.
The Guv'nor pedal through the Fender sounds fat & sweet.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
