Playing suburban venues. Can your band work?

NeilWedd 28 Feb 2005 12:57

Looking into the feasability of bands playing suburban venues.
I know many bands live in suburbia these days and getting crowds to the city is a major exercise?
If we could organise gigs in suburban venue do you think you would get better crowds?

Looking for following info
Where do bands come from?
What size crowd could/have pull in local area?
Would local gigs work?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

The Volt !!! Should be the revolt worst place in melbourne easily i would rather play the barley corn.

You would have to look at somewhere like the commercial in yarraville my band has played consistantly for the last 2-3 years and crowds have never been disappointing.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Wow. That's bad if you'd prefer the BC.

Shouldn't that last post be erased?

In short - no. Suburban venues don't work, period. You might have a lucky nite, but logistically, ferget it.

And the Commercial is a great pub, but I wouldn't call it exactly suburban. I am suspect on the new booker the manager's got in. She seems a bit up-her-arse. But Hey!! I could be wrong. I usually go over her head any way --
OOPS!!! What a give away....

...I'll just skulk off now....</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Does anyone know what the plans are for the Geebung Polo Club in Flemington? (now Trish Shoesmith is managing the venue).</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I recommend Ruby's. Oska is a great bloke and he is always looking to support independent acts; on top of this is the great talent out that way, and the wonderful vibe of the venue.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

The GEEBUNG is I think going to be called the Dutigalla pub, and they are very intent on getting original bands in there. Drop in demos now, coz they are booking, and they have ousted the cover bands. They intend to make it the Corner hotel of Flemington.

Go for it!

I wouldn't call THAT suburban either...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Being from out east (Boronia in fact), my band has had to deal with the concept that unless you're playing all ages gigs (at the likes of TLC and EV's) there ain't much in the way of original music outlets out here.
Maybe something like the Growling Dog which used to be in Ringwood until a few years ago (and housed the likes of Bodyjar) could be a goer, but it's unlikely that it would be a goer. Would city-based bands be interested in trekking out to the 'burbs for a Wednesday night gig? I doubt it.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Suburban gigs can work, but only if you make sure that one of the bands has a reasonable local following.
It would be way easier too if you made these 'suburban' gigs on friday or saturday nights, which shouldn't be so hard to do. This way people will get drunk and not have to worry about getting up early and stuff, and that includes all the bands that play too. You can't know or respect a band until you've all gotten wasted off a rider together.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

I think it's an awesome idea. If you think about it at least 50% of musos and their friends live in the suburbs anyway, so it just makes sense. Most punters I know travel half away across melbourne to get to see a show. It will also bring a bit of culture and social aspects to the suburbs that are infected with old people in pokies venues. Yes it will be slow at first, but after some time, proper management and promotion it will really start to happen. Starting off with just weekend shows is probably wisest. Also all ages shows in suburbs would really go off. Think about it!!!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
