A question of 'cool'

KGrammer 14 Mar 2005 10:28

How about a new topic?

"This ain’t cool this is just great music," was a one of Neil's comments about Melbourne band The Basics. Of course, 'cool' is one of those typically elusive and troublesome words that no one can seem to agree 100% on. But for the sake of argument, let's say by 'cool' he meant "not currently en vogue" (I have read some comments about them as somewhat 'retro' in their songwriting and delivery).

So, my question: is playing 'great music' enough to take a band like The Basics further? Or does their 'lack of cool' work against their popularity?

Of particular interest would be examples of past bands who, despite their lack of cool, were able to transcend the ordinary because of their great music.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

"cool" is in the eye of the beholder.

there are plenty of bands out their that sell records, that their fans obviously think are cool. many of these bands i would personally consider definately uncool. a matter of taste.

i guess this is where a band needs to ask the question, do we consider conforming to a "prescribed cool"? a concious decision to appeal to a certain audience / market.

ain't nothing wrong with it, i just don't think this helps in creating new waves.

at the end of the day, neil is right. truly good songs will go a long way, but if the band isn't visually appealing, you don't do yourselves any favours. not to say you have head out and deck yourselves out like frans or the hives, just some sort of consistency through out the band....</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

sammm 14 Mar 2005 15:40

there are so many examples of complete fucking dork bands that have gone a long way..i'll just use one that should blatantly jump out at even the most stupid person. THE PIXIES.
look at them. my god they're ugly. their music is fuck good and a lot of people love it, therefore they are cool. it's not about what they look like, it's about what they're doing.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

MasterB8 14 Mar 2005 16:41

That's very open-minded of you sammm. I wonder what you would think of a kick-arse band playing at your local pub in footy shorts and rip curl t-shirts.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

they'd probably be playing jimmy barnes covers.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Cool is dead.

System has spoken.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

pacifier 16 Mar 2005 10:30

Wait a couple of years and what they play might be cool... At least they wont have to compete with the hoard of bands who all look and sound the same...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

KGrammer 16 Mar 2005 17:51

Good point pacifier, but I think the reason they are 'not cool' is BECAUSE they don't look or sound like anyone else at the moment.

There seems to be two types of bands that are 'cool' at the moment, and there are a whole bunch of them: on the one hand you have 67 Special, Cannon, etc etc ad nauseum, and other the other those like The Vasco Era. They're either one or the other, but these two 'varieties' seem to be the 'cool' at the moment, hence The Basics not belonging to this defined 'cool'.

Anyway, the example of The Pixies is quite good, wondering if anyone could think of others?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

beachball 16 Mar 2005 20:05

I reckon any bands "cool" if it gets it's shit together enough to put out a record, but bands who haven't released anything shouldn't even look at the word.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Mitch04 17 Mar 2005 00:49

The Shins are some the of most un-cool looking gimps goin around, yet they're sellin stacks of records and playing sell-out shows.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Cool is non existent in Melbourne. There are too many dorks playing music these day. I’m sick of watching daggy bands looking at there feet for 45 minutes. Bands should make an effort to look good on stage and play good music.

We are in the show business. Muso’s should look the part. Dorky band’s don’t go anywhere…….unless your father is in the music industry!!!!!

KGrammer 17 Mar 2005 10:53

Agreed sam2can... the idea of being in showbusiness is one most bands are unaware of. I think of great showmen like Little Richard and there is really no present-day comparison.

But, that said, even in the 'good old days', acclaimed 'showmen' like Chuck Berry, Mick Jagger, John Fogerty, The Beatles, Pink Floyd, etc etc didn't really do that much on-stage. Just think of Roy Orbison - great entertainer, and he just stood there.

I suppose it's about making the stage your own, and whether that be with a new 'move' or combining the 'moves of old' in a new way, I don't think it matters. Dammit, you can stand there like Orbison and own the stage, it's about presence.

Having presence is the real cool, and I disagree that there aren't any Melbourne bands with this potential to own the stage. Just to name a few that I have seen: Spargo, The Suns, 67 Special, The Basics, Late Nite Access, Bordello, The Froze, The Nat Allison Band, dammit there's quite a few there.

Honestly, I think you should get off the computer and check out these bands sam2can. Fruit Loops will be supplied.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Some very interesting comments. I've seen some of the bands KGrammer mentioned and agree they have 'presence' - I also agree with the comment regarding the two types of bands considered 'cool' at the moment.

In relation to 'The Basics' who I have seen a few times and who were mentioned at the start of this post - I have to agree with Neil's II review - they are pretty close to mind-blowing at times. If there is a question over their 'coolness' -perhaps it is that they lack some of the 'refined mediocrity' of some of Melbourne's apparently cool bands.

However I don't see not being cool as a problem in the long-term. The question was asked (and I paraphrase) "what uncool bands have 'made-it' over the years?"

I would turn that one around and ask people for the names of 'cool at the time' bands that have been completely and utterly forgotten. I suggest that the list would be extensive (if anyone could actually remember the bands' names).

Maybe some-one like Neil could tell us who was 'cool' on the Melbourne rock scene in 1986, and what they are up to now. My hypothesis is that we'd look and listen to these bands and find them somewhat mediocre, but at the time that particularly brand of ordinary was 'cool'.

If I were in a band now I would take good songs and 'presence' over cool any day.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>
