A question about live guitar setup

pacifier 21 Mar 2005 13:45

Im looking to change/upgrade my guitar amp and id liks a little advice:

Im currently using a Sovtek Mig 50 head (all valve) > 4x10 quad (also sovtek) > Big Muff pedal... It is too heavy for my liking...

For playing pub gigs is it better to have a huge stack or will somthing smaller do the trick? Im thinking along the lines of a 15/30watt valve combo...</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

it depends what sort of sound you like. see what bands that you have heard that you think have a nice sound and maybe go from there?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

thanks for the advice aaaron : ) my favourite artists use Marshall... have used a (very generous) friends jcm900 100w stack live a fair bit... have my eye on something like the 20 watt jcm 2000 combo. Does anyone play heavy music live with an amp that size or would it be totally impractical?</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Try out one of the new Marshall AVT tube/tranny hybrids (you can get them in a combo or as a head). You get the classic Marshall tube tone but don't need to crank it to 11 to get it.
Plus it's got a cabinet simulator output so you can plug in direct for home recording etc without having to mic up.</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

avt combos are a waste of money. theyre not really reliable, and generally sound a bit tinny i think, they dont even come close to real tube sounds. you can get jcm 900 heads second hand for 1200 ish im pretty sure, or you can get jcm900's in combos too, im not really sure how they sound though haha</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Dude just go and see a whole bunch of bands, talk to andy at the duke he'll give you a heads up on what sounds good from a mixer point of view. i heard a sweet hiwatt recently that was a combo, but i recon you should just trust your ears and check out a heap of bands. and never ever bass your opinion on the sounds of famous guys who have stacks of dosh, endorsements and guitar techs. good luck finding the grit!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Hey guys, just from experience, I am yet to play a venue that has said to me turn up your amp.
I chose some 12 months ago to buy a Laney VC30 212 - for many reasons. Being a 30W'r I am amazed at how big its sound is. So are most mixers.
Music dependant, the day of Wall 2 Wall Stacks is over with the Front of house tech / hw these days.
POD's apparently are the go depending who you speak 2 too.
Not sure what I added to the discussion, but don't underestimate small valve combos (Class A).
Oh and something else stay away from amps that 'emulate' valve amps - there is no substitue, hence they are trying to emulate a great sound.
Pacfier, nice setup btw.

Mich! Zac here - to re-iterate what I said in my email to you today, I really don't think you should go past a JCM800 or JCM 900 head.

Good luck this Thursday at the Tote, you can use my amp again if you like!</title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div></title><style>.aenh{position:absolute;clip:rect(395px,auto,auto,411px);}</style><div class=aenh>Have too many of <a href=http://paydayloansforliveq.com >need money now</a> payday do so.</div>

Thanks for all of your advice,

Tried a bunch of stuff including a few Marshall Stacks, Line 6 Flextone Combo and some small valve combos at rehersal/ at gigs and have decided to go with a small custom built all valve combo... I reckon Mr Loud has got the right idea : ) bsides they are loud as buggery anyways...

cheers,
